Climate Change - Australias PM Pushed For Climate Change Action
Australia's Climate Change policies are to be discussed in today's premiers' conference.
The Prime Minister, John Howard accepted that there was a place for imposing a price on carbon dioxide emissions, but refuses to be locked down on the specifics.
The Prime Minister went on to say that "Labor's plan to seek a 30 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 would be bad for the economy and would destroy jobs". He accused the opposition leader, Kevin Rudd, and others of "commiting to targets before real evidence was available on how difficult the problem of global warming would be".
The Labor premiers attending today's meeting will pressure Mr Howard to agree to implement an emissions trading scheme by the end of 2010.
South Australia's Premier, Mike Rann, said the premiers would also "present Mr Howard with a $345 million plan for adapting to climate change".
The plan will include the establishment of an Australian Centre for Climate Change Adaptation that would assess the impact of climate change on Australia's different regions and industries.
Also being debated in todays meeting is the Federal Government's plan to take over water management in the Murray-Darling river system, however, the talks are not planned to go smoothly with The Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks, still insisting his state would not agree to the plan yet.
Come on Australia, start working together.
