Canberra, Australia's capital city, could be facing tough water restrictions, says the chief minister, Jon Stanhope.

"There is a real possibility that Canberra will move to level 4 water restrictions by July" he said.

level 4 water restrictions ban all forms of outdoor watering.

Mr Stanhope said it was up to water utility ACTEW to make a final decision on the timing of any move, but added that situation in Canberra is critical.

"The issue is then of course for ACTEW whether we would go straight to level four or whether there is some adjustment to level four that might be possible to allay some of the more dramatic aspects in other words no watering outside that level four provides, but our situation is grave," he said.
