Climate Change - Earth Hour Results
On Saturday 31st March, between 7:30pm and 8:30pm, more than 2 million Sydneysiders switched off their lights to celebrate Earth Hour - an initiative started by the WWF and Sydney Morning Herald, which hopes to reduce Sydneys Carbon emissions by 5% during 2007.
Although only 65,000 households had pledged to support Earth Hour, more than half of Sydneys residents and businesses joined in on the night, reducing the average energy usage for this period by 10.2%.
![]() | Earth Hour Results for March 31, 2007 Earth Hour brought about a 10.2% reduction in energy usage for an average Saturday night in March/April. The equivalent of 48,000 cars off the road for 1 hour, or 200,000 TVs switched off for 1 hour. The total carbon emission saved was 25 tonnes. |
The overwhelming success of Earth Hour has inspired WWF to make it an international annual event - imagine the savings we could realise if every major city in the world took part.
We thank WWF and Sydney Morning Herald for their efforts to organise the event and wish them every success in making this global.
Well done Sydney - you should be proud!
