General Environmental - Top 5 Tips for a Greener Living
With the launch of the Caring Planet website, we've decided to round up our top 5 tips for a greener living. They are all easy things that you can do to help the environment. The majority of which won't cost you a thing, and will probably save you money.
1. Unplug Electrical Items
Electrical items that are switched off at the unit, and not at the plug socket can still use up to 80% of the electricity that is used when the item is in full operation. By getting into the routine of switching electrical items off at the wall, you'll save yourself money and reduce your carbon emissions considerably.
2. Swicth Off Taps Whilst Brushing Your Teeth
By leaving the tap running whilst you brush your teeth, you are wasting roughly 5 litres of water per minute. If you brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes, you waste over 7000 litres of water per year.
3. Buy Energy Saving Bulbs
Energy Saving bulbs use up to 80% less electricity than regular incandescent bulbs. The life span of an energy saving bulb is between 8000 and 15000 hours compared to an average of 1000 hours for a regular bulb. Although energy saving bulbs cost a little more up front, the money you save in electricty should negate the extra cost after about 500 hours of use.
4. Recycled Goods
By using recycled products, you reduce the amount of CO2 emissions that are used burning waste. By recycling your own goods, you further help to reduce carbon emissions and help to reduce the impact of Global Warming. Aluminium, Steel, Glass, Paper and even some plastics can all be recycled.
5. Fix Your Leaks
A leaking tap can waste up to 2000 litres of water per month. Fixing a leaking tap is usually as simple as replacing a washer - it costs next to nothing. Check the taps in your house, and report any leaking taps in public places such as schools, colleges and workplaces.
