Food And Agriculture - When is Organic Not Organic

I was both very surprised and disappointed to learn this week that Australia does not have any national regulation to control the labeling of organic food and goods. That means that anyone can legally call their produce organic, whether it is or not.

Australia really needs to introduce regulation in this area to prevent consumers from being duped.

Organic Certification

While exported organic goods must meet the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce, the Australian Organic Food Directory says certification is the only way to guarantee that a product bought in Australia is truly organic.

Consumer Advice

Consumers should be wary of produce that is labelled organic, natural or chemical free, but does not display the growers name and a certification number.

When buying from an organic retailer, check for the Organic Retailers' and Growers' Association of Australia (ORGAA) notice, or ask the retailer if they are a member.

How absurd. I don't live in Australia, but have been many times, and eaten what I thought was organic food. You are right - this does need to be regulated.
